Amsler Grid Test — Andrew Lomas Optometrists

Amsler grid test

A simple, one-minute check you can do at home to spot early changes in your central vision — particularly useful if you're managing or at risk of macular degeneration (AMD).

How to use it

  1. If you normally wear reading glasses, put them on.
  2. Hold this page about 30–40cm from your face, in good light.
  3. Cover one eye, and look directly at the black dot in the centre of the grid.
  4. Without moving your eye, notice whether any of the lines look wavy, blurred, or missing.
  5. Repeat with the other eye covered.

The grid

When printed, this grid measures 10cm × 10cm — the standard size for this test.

If anything looks different – wavy lines, a blurred patch, or a missing area – don't wait for your next routine appointment. Contact us promptly so we can take a proper look.
